Low tide at Saunders Beach, Townsville Queensland. Another gorgeous afternoon and evening hiking with my dogs and my camera. I've been wandering up to this end of the beach regularly for a couple of months with my dogs. It is deserted, I've never seen another soul while up here as it is quite a hike from the village with a tidal creek crossing that often makes it inaccessible and the area is a croc habitat (as are most of the mangrove beaches in North Queensland).
But to me this spot is intriguing- it is littered with nature's debris; lots of wonderful shapes - encrusted stumps and fallen trees which become more visible with the lower tides. So I've been watching this area and was just waiting for low-tide to coincide with sunset and nice weather and sky. That was yesterday evening. So I bundled the tripod and filters and camera into the backpack with extra water and bowl for the dogs and we set off.
As I wandered the area this one gnarly encrusted tree in the middle of a tidal pool kept appealing to me. So the next challenge was finding a "non-sinking spot" in the water for myself and my tripod at an angle I liked. I set up a few test shots, decided on filters and then waited the quarter hour or so for sunset while enjoying watching the pelicans flying in and clustering on some nearby sand banks and my dogs exploring nearby. As sunset came in, I adjusted my angle again slightly for the sky and clouds and managed to make a few long exposures to smooth out the tidal ripples before the water started getting higher and the light began to disappear. Then all wet, smelly but happy, the five of us hiked back to the car. A really lovely way to spend the afternoon and early evening.
This is such a beautiful serene shot--and I love the differences between this and the other. While this one is cool with the blues, the other excites with the reds. Wonderful photos!
